Due to the rapid expansion of internet services such as Google Search, Gmail, and YouTube, Google established a new data center in Eemshaven, Netherlands, in 2016 with an initial investment of €600 million. This was followed by a €500 million expansion in 2018. In June 2019, further expansion in Eemshaven was announced, along with plans for an additional site in Middenmeer, located approximately 108 km to the south. These investments bring Google’s total data center investment in the Netherlands to €2.5 billion.
